CIVIC Class of 2016 alum and board member, Rev. Kevin Swann is the Pastor of Ivy Baptist Church in Newport News. Ivy Baptist has partnered with World Central Kitchen (a non-profit organization based out of Washington, D.C.), and local restaurants Bowman’s Soul in the Wall and Mango Mangeaux, to provide free meals to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through this partnership, Ivy Baptist serves over 1,100 meals each week from its church location. The meals specifically go to the elderly and impoverished families who are in need of assistance. According to Rev. Swann, “Needs don’t stop during a pandemic and this partnership is an example of what organizations can accomplish when the meeting the needs of the community is the greatest priority.”
