Professionalism.

Leadership.

We’re fostering a spirit of professionalism and leadership in college students of Hampton Roads and connecting them to established business and community leaders, in order to build a community of leaders who are excellently prepared for their careers and a life of civic engagement.

In 2013, the CIVIC Leadership Institute and Old Dominion University had the vision of empowering talented college students by connecting them to executive-level leaders in the Hampton Roads Community. The two organizations collaborated to create the CIVIC Scholars Program and launched the civic engagement and leadership development program at ODU.

CIVIC Scholars seeks to teach its members about issues that Hampton Roads and other communities face and challenges them to think critically about possible solutions to these problems. The students participate in program sessions, volunteer opportunities, and a group project. Students of Junior standing and above are connected with a mentor who’s a proven business or community leader. Additionally, CIVIC Scholars are invited to attend two annual events hosted by the CIVIC Leadership Institute: the Darden Awards and Founders’ Luncheon.

The program runs through the academic year and is available to students attending Old Dominion University and the Norfolk and Chesapeake campuses of Tidewater Community College. Applications are now being accepted for the Class of 2018 until Friday, April 14th.

  • Collaborative: CIVIC Scholars value teamwork and want to increase their collaboration skills.
  • Community oriented: Our Scholars value the people in their communities and have a drive for positive social impact.
