CIVIC Leadership Institute Newsletter | Issue 1 | June 2020
Message from the President & CEO
Dear CIVIC Alumni:
I hope this email finds you safe and well. This is the first in a series of newsletters we have purposefully titled CIVIC IMPACT. In this forum, we’ll share updates and provide a platform for alumni to come together, find ways to serve our community, and share examples of how we can all make an impact.
This nation is at a pivotal moment, and our community is in need of committed leaders ready to listen, learn, and act. CIVIC is prepared to galvanize that leadership and shepherd this important process. I’m fully committed to utilizing the organization’s resources, talent, and programming to advance this discussion and determine ways to create meaningful change. Over the summer, we invite you to participate in several virtual alumni planning sessions. We’ll discuss how Hampton Roads can truly make a difference in the national discussion. We’ll also determine how best to modify CIVIC’s programming to meet the moment. To do all that, we need you. Please stay tuned for details so you can participate in this important work.
Over the past weeks and months, our alumni have demonstrated the real benefit of CIVIC’s influence and network, and we’ve selected a few of these stories to share in this newsletter. If you have a story we can spotlight, please send it to us. The goal is to inspire others to play a role in creating change.
Thank you for being stewards of our region. I look forward to working alongside each of you as we demonstrate to the world that the 757 is comprised of committed leaders resolved to creating meaningful change.
CIVIC Leadership in the Community
We are excited to collaborate with several regional organizations as part of the COVID-19 Business Recovery Forum – 757. CIVIC has already identified alumni to be part of independent committees that will assist in the economic recovery effort from COVID-19. Stories to Inspire

CIVIC Alumni Volunteer Opportunities
CIVIC alumni have always enjoyed the opportunity to gather, learn and in turn, make an impact. COVID-19 has certainly prevented many of the usual events and get-togethers, but we have found there are many opportunities for alumni to not only connect, but to make a difference. We have identified opportunities for alumni to volunteer in the coming months.
Like so many non-profits, the Foodbanks on the Southside and the Peninsula have been on the front lines throughout this pandemic. We have the opportunity for alumni to register to volunteer together. Please join us for our first volunteer opportunity on June 25th and keep an eye out for more opportunities coming soon. Let us demonstrate the power of our alumni community. Learn More >>
What IMPACT Will You Make Today?
Please take a moment to think of ways you can give back to our community. Perhaps it is making a donation of your time or treasure to a non-profit that you are passionate about or that inspires you. There are so many organizations that are working tirelessly on the front lines, they need our support collectively to be able to provide those services that so many in our community need and depend on.
Please share on our social media pages any events or opportunities that you are involved in that other CIVIC alumni can join. After all there is power in numbers!
Don’t forget that the Best Class Ever trophy is up for grabs. We are noting all efforts amongst the classes of volunteering and service within the community, as well as your donations and membership to help support CIVIC’s mission. In the fall we will announce which lucky class will be the recipient of this coveted title. Please email Amasa Smith any stories you have and through a very complicated algorithm we will determine who the winners of this prestigious award will be for 2020! Submit here >>
